Tattoo Aftercare Instructions
Congratulations on your new tattoo! Proper aftercare is essential to ensure your tattoo heals well and looks vibrant. Please follow these instructions carefully:
1. Initial Care (First 24 Hours)
-
Keep It Covered: Leave the bandage or wrap on for at least 2-4 hours after leaving the studio. This helps protect your tattoo from bacteria and keeps it moist.
-
Wash Your Hands: Before touching your tattoo, always wash your hands with soap and water.
2. Cleaning Your Tattoo
-
Gently Clean: After removing the bandage, gently wash the tattoo with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free soap. Use your hands, not a washcloth.
-
Pat Dry: Carefully pat the area dry with a clean paper towel. Do not rub or scrub.
3. Moisturizing
-
Apply Ointment: After cleaning, apply a thin layer of a recommended aftercare ointment (like Aquaphor or a tattoo-specific ointment) to keep the tattoo moisturized. Do this 2-3 times a day for the first few days.
-
Switch to Lotion: After the first few days, switch to a fragrance-free lotion. Continue to moisturize for about two weeks.
4. General Care
-
Avoid Soaking: Do not submerge your tattoo in water (baths, pools, hot tubs) for at least 2 weeks. Quick showers are fine.
-
No Sun Exposure: Keep your tattoo out of direct sunlight for at least 2 weeks. After it’s healed, apply sunscreen to protect it from fading.
-
Don’t Scratch or Pick: As your tattoo heals, it may itch or peel. Avoid scratching or picking at scabs, as this can lead to scarring or infection.
5. Signs of Infection
Monitor your tattoo for signs of infection, which can include:
-
Increased redness or swelling
-
Pus or unusual discharge
-
Severe pain or tenderness
-
Fever or chills
If you notice any of these symptoms, contact a healthcare professional.
6. Healing Time
Healing typically takes 2-4 weeks, but full healing can take several months. Be patient, and remember that each tattoo and person is different.
